What follows are lessons on preparation, humility, race relations, and nature’s wild unpredictability. Through it all, Derick “Mr.Fabulous” Lugo refuses to let any challenge squash his inner Pollyanna, persevering with humor, tenacity, and an unshakeable commitment to grooming that sees him from Georgia to Maine. I treated myself to an adventure! It’s a heartfelt humorous tale of an inexperienced hiker tackling the AT while discovering unlikely bonds and lessons the author would have missed out on if he hadn’t taken a big leap from NYC on to the AT. I look forward to reading more by him. No pressure!:) 5 out of 5 Katie Calano – January 7, 2021 I just finished reading The Unlikely Thru-Hiker, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors. Lugo is an engaging, detailed storyteller! I felt as if l were walking with him in the woods. His positive attitude paired with honesty was, dare I say it: FABULOUS. I loved how he described those he met on the trail, and I enjoyed the dialogue full of wit! Get this book and read it!! 5 out of 5 Janet Steinert – June 7, 2021 I’ve read many AT adventure books and even wrote one myself. I have to say that Derick Lugo’s honest and often laugh-out-loud account of his thru hike is a wonderful break from the real world and a nice transport onto the Appalachian Trail.
